That Can't Be Right

I see where the Detroit Free Press sports section was named one of the ten best in the country. Is anyone else wondering just how bad the other nine have to be? The Freep sports section has been on a steady decline for years. I regularly find it laughably underwhelming. There are days I pick up the entire section and can see through it. Not just light, but actually objects on the other side. How is that one of the top sports sections in the land?

The Freep one of the best sports pafes in the country? Your joke is killing me. Keep up the good satire! HA!

What? You're serious? That's just sad... The local sports pages are the actual joke. If that fishwrap can get awards, I'd hate to see what most other sports pages around the counrty look like.

You have to wonder what kinds of criteria are considered. Does it have to do with amount and quality of content? Is "the look" important? How much are the writers taken into consideration? (And how much does Albom's reputation still factor into any prestige?)

Even in Detroit, I think the News has a much better sports section, day-in and day-out. And maybe this isn't a consideration, but their internet offerings are much, much better, too.

And on many days, the Ann Arbor News' section is better.

What the hell were the other 9?

I'm continually disappointed by the Detroit papers, but I can never tell if that's because I got incredibly used to my sports pages being the Boston Globe, which is legitimately awesome, especially in its online content.

The Boston Globe is the sports section all other metropolitan newspapers should strive for. Their Sunday section makes me want to cry, comparing it to what we get in Detroit.

(Maybe that'll change once the Freep takes over the Sunday newspaper in June? Let's hope...)
