I Wonder About This, Too

Skip Bayless doesn't think Rafael Palmeiro belongs in baseball's Hall of Fame. I can't quite decide if I believe Raffy is Cooperstown worthy, either.

My biggest thing with Palmeiro is that he has never been the best at his position, which to me, is one of the top criteria for a Hall of Famer.

But the guy's body of work is just so hard to ignore. He may never have been the top first baseman or DH in the American League, but his longevity - and the numbers he accumulated during those years - will probably get him in.

I almost did a spit-take with my coffee -- Palmeiro NOT a Hall of Famer? I'm sorry, but 500 homers and 3,000 hits gets you in, no matter how you went about accumulating them. It's a no-brainer, and he should be a first-ballot guy.

Perhaps, HOF "worthy" was a poor word choice on my part. I'll spot you that. However, I just don't see Raffy on a list with Mays, Williams and Mantle. Or Gehrig, Greenberg and Foxx.

I'm one of those who still holds the Hall to a ridiculously high, totally subjective standard. Call me, well, call me whatever, it probably fits.

If I was a Hall voter, I'd select him because, as both of you point out, you cannot argue the totals.

But when you tell your grandkids about the players you watched how soon will Palmeiro's name come up?

Sorry, about the coffee, Greg.
